Dr. Michael J. Link

Dr. Michael J. Link is the Charles B. and Ann L. Johnson Professor of Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota with a joint appointment in Otorhinolaryngology also at the academic rank of Professor.  Dr. Link grew up in Dubuque, Iowa before attending the University of Iowa where he graduated with Honors and Highest Distinction.  He then attended Mayo Medical School in Rochester and stayed to complete a General Surgery Internship and residency training in Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine.  This was followed by a one-year fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery with Dr. John Tew at the University of Cincinnati/Mayfield Clinic.  Dr. Link then began his career at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville for two years before returning to Mayo Clinic Rochester, on faculty since 1999.  There, he has dedicated his career to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with benign and malignant skull base disorders and enjoys an extremely busy microsurgical and radiosurgical clinical practice.  Dr. Link is the Past President of the North American Skull Base Society (2014-2015).  He is Associate Editor, Skull Base section of Operative Neurosurgery and co-Editor in Chief of The Journal of Neurological Surgery, Part B: Skull Base.  He is the program director for a highly competitive Skull Base Oncology fellowship with graduates at academic institutions throughout the United States and in Egypt, Kenya, Israel, Japan and U.A.E.  His research interests include assessing how skull base disorders affect patients’ quality of life and defining objective outcomes from different treatment modalities.  With his colleagues, they have also investigated the natural history of many of these tumors to further understand the implications of intervention.  Additionally, they have analyzed possible protein signaling pathways and the effects of the immune microenvironment on the growth of vestibular schwannomas, in particular.  Dr. Link has been given the Teacher of the Year award in Neurologic Surgery three times and in 2023 received the Distinguished Clinician award from Mayo Clinic Rochester.  In his spare time he enjoys skiing, motorcycling, sailing, and spending time with his family.
